it's that time of the year again

no, not the birth of christ
no, not the ...well...whatever hanukha celebrates

1/2 cup matzah meal
2 eggs
2 tbsp. oil or schmaltz (melted chicken fat)
2 tbsp. water or chicken broth
2 tbsp. fresh chopped parsley
a little black pepper
2 quarts thin chicken broth or consommé

Beat the eggs, oil and water together thoroughly. Add the matzah meal, parsley and black pepper and mix until you achieve an even consistency. Let this sit for a few minutes, so the matzah meal absorbs the other ingredients, and stir again.

Bring the broth to a vigorous boil, then reduce the heat until the broth is just barely boiling. Wet your hands and make balls of about 1-2 tbsp. of the batter. Drop the balls gently into the boiling water. They will be cooked enough to eat in about 15 minutes; however, you may want to leave it simmering longer to absorb more of the chicken broth flavor. They are done when they float on top of the broth and look bloated.

For lighter matzah balls, use a little less oil, a little more water, and cook at a lower temperature for a longer time. For heavier matzah balls, do the reverse. If you are using this to treat a cold, put extra black pepper into the broth (pepper clears the sinuses).

Easy MINI KISSES Choco-Cherry Pie

Ingredients:

1 baked 9-inch pie crust, cooled
1-3/4 cups (10-oz. pkg.) HERSHEY'S MINI KISSES Brand Milk Chocolates, divided
1-1/2 cups miniature marshmallows
1/3 cup milk
1 cup (1/2 pt.)cold whipping cream
1 can (21 oz.) cherry pie filling, chilled
Whipped topping

Directions:
1. Prepare pie crust.

2. Place 1 cup baking pieces, marshmallows and milk in medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at HIGH (100%) 1-1/2 to 2 minutes or until chocolate is softened and mixture is melted and smooth when stirred; cool completely.

3. Beat whipping cream in small bowl until stiff; fold into chocolate mixture. Spoon into prepared crust. Cover; refrigerate 4 hours or until firm.

4. Garnish top of pie with cherry pie filling, whipped topping and remaining chocolates just before serving. Refrigerate leftover pie. About 8 servings.

i was planning a huge hoopla, a trip etc

as for turning 30

some people freak
but i look forward to it
seeing as i spent most of my 20's in school
or thinking about school
i believe this is my decade...
until i turn 40
then that my decade
until i turn 50... and so on and so on
plus at this age i really feel comfortable
with who i am
with my body and my brains...
i feel more attractive than i ever have
despite breaking out all the freaking time...
i feel smarter and more capable of any task

so now that i am (almost) 30
what do i have in plan
well i think the big project is health
not that i am in bad health
but i know i could be better
(note to self: no more hot wing and breadstick dinners...like last nite....)
i really want to focus on exercise and yoga
especially yoga...i like the ideal that i can be all flexy
and maybe, one day have the ability to have a sense of balance
and not even the emotional, spiritual kind
but the stand up and not fall kind!
oh and i am psyched because its time for my five year physical...
i like to get the full work-up every major age
this year i am including a colonoscopy...
does being extremely excited to have a scope with a lil camera
shoved up my bowel to look for and harness any irregularities
make me the weirdest person ever?
yeah, i thought so....

again i spent my 20's in a committed long term relationship
one i have few regrets about
but i feel as if i lost a big piece of me during that relationship
the answers to no one, that sense of personal ambition that nothing can stop
i am not a person who looks back and regrets my decisions
i don't regret choosing my relationship over other opportunities
but i have a feeling (a fear) that i will be reluctant to do it again
so i am not looking for anything or anyone
i find it hard to imagine myself with someone else
i am really a very selfish person so i find it hard to include someone in my own lil world
as for dating...well that's fun...but i often feel like i am leading someone on...

this would be a dilemma if i wasn't so content being me
and life as it is...
i'm far from lonely
i do miss people giving me presents randomly,
but come on that only lasts for so long anyways
whatever happens will
when it wants
the only thing i am certain about is that i will remain the same
dysfunctional, quirky, unable to commit flirt that i am!

so this has probably been my most personal, truthful and contemplative blog

anywhere.

i have a swedish film fest going on at my apt this weekend. netflix allows me to watch strange things. that make me want to smoke and eat liverwurst and nasty salted fish.

Schnapps or aquavit, served icy cold, is a superb Swedish drink, often used to accompany smorgasbord. The run-of-the-mill Swedish beer (pilsner) has only a small amount of alcohol. All restaurants serve lättol (light beer) and folköl, a somewhat stronger brew. Swedish vodka, or brännvin, is made from corn and potatoes and flavored with different spices. and one of the jokes was about someones friends having babies
and then they turn into those little half human/half baby things
i thought it was funny...

frontline ran a fabulous, depressing, informative, scary 4 hour long show
on the aids pandemic...
this is a must see people
the first half is the historical background of the emergence of the disease
most of which i knew already
if it wasn't true and happening in our times
it makes for a engrossing story
did you know the first death from aids was in 1959.
one symbian to human transmission is the base for the plague of lifetime.

the second part focuses on the 90's to now
with the emphasis on the political aspects around the world
and the catastophic effect this disease has had on so many countries
mainly in the developing world
40 million people are currently infected with hiv
5 million new infections are estimated every year
over 20 million people have died from this disease since the 1980's.
there is no cure
modern medicine has developed drugs that allow hiv/aids patients to live an average of 8 years longer than before... but there is no cure...
western countries have access to 24 medications (extremely toxic) that can be combined to treat aids...countries like south africa and brazil have three...
the us has pledged 15 BILLION dollars for drugs in these countries...
20% go to eductation programs, but only if these programs are abstinence based programs...
and the problem with providing the triple cocktail to these countries...weak infrastructure that prevents easy distribution...these drugs are a lifetime commitment....and the US aid program is up for renewal in 2008...what happens to those who are currently receiving the drugs if the United States congress does not renew...

I have always stood firm that the pharm companies (a neccessary evil?????) should work with the governments to provide fair and affordable treatment/medication to all nations...but my recent studies have led me to question this approach. Treatment is not a feasible option, econimically, socially even yes morally. In South Africa, 40,000 hiv/aids patients receive the free medications. 40,000 out of 5million patients. In one country.
Education is the only option. T
The battle at this point in our time is to not cure but prevention. Condoms, the new microbides, abstinence, social education. This needs to be the primary focus, without mopral judgement, with a firm base in science.This is science's battle to lose.

So people, please pay attention.
There are two issues facing our world today
that requires action from every single person.

i have three books i want to read
1) Freakonomics- I was going to read it before VCU implemented as the campus wide book to read for 2206-2007.
2)Passage to India- I saw most the movie. It's long. Therefore it goes on my list.
And i had a recent successful attempt at curry

INGREDIENTS:

2 tablespoons coconut cream
5 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon tamarind pulp
2 tablespoons boiling water
1 tablespoon chickpea flour
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon coriander seed
1 head cauliflower, broken into small florets
1 teaspoon mustard seed
2 tablespoons vegetable oil for frying
salt to taste

DIRECTIONS:

Dissolve the coconut cream in 5 tablespoons milk.
Soak the tamarind in 2 tablespoons boiling water, 5 to 10 minutes. Squeeze the husk and discard the tamarind piece, save the water.
Combine the tamarind water with the flour, chili powder and coriander in a mixing bowl, mix well. Add the cauliflower and coconut milk, stir until cauliflower is coated.
Heat oil in a saucepan. Place the mustard seeds in the oil, when they start popping add the cauliflower mixture. Cover with a lid and simmer until cauliflower is tender, stir occasionally.

3) Black Dahlia- I am not sure if this is the actual name of the book. Famous murder case, corruption and sex in the 1930's. A movie is being made with Jenny from the L-word and Hilary Swank. Oh and some other people...

i'm just generally pleased with the story arc of this season veronica mars...
and the fact that logan and veronica (the actors) have so much chemistry it makes my fingers tingle...
like a good romantic pairing should

(however i kept thinking they shouldn't kiss...she just found out she has chlamydia...ah the std storyline done so well with emma on degrassi...bj's and gonorhea....)
i like the song too...
as much as i find the character logan so dreamy....tortured and witty and bad but not really bad
i know that it only works for me on tv...
i don't have the patience or empathy to put up with such a person in real life
i like my melodrama to be fictional...

I read. I read alot.
I, however, do not own alot of books.
Instead, I go to the library or when I do buy books I pass them on to people. Sometimes I leave them in random places for others to enjoy.
For me, books are like fire to the firespinners...
without the whole third degree burn, singed hair smell
and they aren't as sexy.
(I can wear leather pants while reading, but I choose not too. They chafe)

I read alot. And I read fast.
Which means I take in quite a bit of crap.
But every so often I find a true gem
Something that makes my heart sing
and my fantasies take off.

So I thought I would put down into words the my top 10 books
(all of which I advocate strongly for)

1) To Kill a Mockingbird- Harper Lee
If I could write, this is the book that I would write.
Scout, Atticus and Boo Radley are three of the greatest literary characters, in my opinion.
Mockingbird was Lee's only book and I can see why
Favorite part: The showdown between Atticus Finch and the rabid dog.

2) Murder on the Nile- Agatha ChristieIf I could write several books, this would be one of them.
I love Agatha Christie, between her and Nancy Drew I developed this deep love for the mystery. Truly the greates genre of books. Ever
I have traveled with Hercule Poirot (greatest detective EVER!) around the world, but no where more exciting or treacherous as this boat tour down the great river.
Favorite moment: The solving of the crime. So freaking complex.

3)Devil in the White City-Erik Larsen
Recent non-fiction. I reccomend this to everyone. The story of the building the worlds fair turn of the century Chicago is filled with intrigue, fun facts, horrid murder and the best history lesson about the rise of the Windy City. You know a book is fabulous when you wish the chapters on the first serial killer would be shorter so you can read more about the architect in charge of such a huge project.
Favorite tidbit: First use of widespread electricity.

4)War and Peace-Tolstoy
So russian. So long. Every other character is named some form of Nicholas. War and Peace is why I love huge books entrenched in history, filled with hundreds of characters. I have read it twice-once to say I have read it, the second time because it was so good.
Favorite part: The taking of Moscow

5)Lovely Bones- Alice Sebold
Please read this book. It will affect you deeply.
What happens to us and loved ones when we die. Heaven never seemed so good and bittersweet.
Favorite piece: The opening line

6)Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austin
The greatest love story. Funny too. No wonder people keep making movies about it.Even a bollywood version
Favorite Characters: Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy, duh

7) Harry Potter 4&5-JK Rowling

I read this within three days so they seem like one book to me. These volumes reflect a darker more intriguing Harry. The action is more fun, the new characters are more interesting and Voldemort- he scares the crap out of me.How will the series end? Can Harry be expected to live. JK Rowling, I am your bitch!
Favorite Character: I really do like Harry.

8)Watership Downs-Richard Adams
It's a book about bunnies! How can one go wrong.
Oh, I don't know- maybe the fact this book is scary as hell. This is no Peter Rabbit. It's bloody, violent and an interesting look into society. Yes, with bunnies. FIVER!
Favorite Moment: The scary, cult of fat bunnies and the barbed wire.

9)Sophies Choice-William Styron
Of the american writers from this time period, William Styron is my favorite.
Often overlooked in the story of the holocaust are the thousands of Poles who were sent to concentration camps. A country continually invaded, my people used as pawns of one madman or another. Modern Day america and how the past haunts you.
What is Sophies Choice? Let us just say it will break your heart, make you hate her, make you pity her, make you wonder if you could make the same?
Favorite Anything: Meryl Streep is Sophie

10)The Westing Game-Ellen Raskin
This book makes so many adult mysteries look childish. Found in the YA section of your bookstore this story has so many twists and turns you will need to read it twice!

Favorite Character: Turtle

i also love margaritas...

Frozen Margaritas

6-ounce can of frozen limeade concentrate
6 ounces tequila
2 ounces triple sec
6 ounces lemon-lime soda
5 cups crushed ice
lime slices
margarita salt

Pour limeade concentrate, tequila, triple sec and soda into large plastic container, and stir to mix. Fill blender with 5 cups crushed ice. Add limeade mixture to ice in blender and blend until slushy. Pour into salt-rimmed Margarita glasses. Garnish with lime slices.

Note: Squeeze half a lime into a small bowl with a flat bottom. Dip each glass into the lime juice and then into the margarita salt.(http://www.texascooking.com/recipes/fmargaritas.htm)

hello all
last nite was a reminder that i really need to get out more

it really sounds like something a person would put on their resume...
in 2006 I participated in the terrorist surveillance program and all i got was this damn t-shirt!

so things are going well
i am however concerned with my lack of energy in the evenings...
i have been tired alot lately
which impacts my ability to get my butt moving to the gym
which then makes me tired...
however, i am going to kick it into gear
and start taking multi-vitamins...
i am planning on a flow yoga course this evening
so hopefully that will help

i have a ton of meetings over the next few days...
its what happens when one is fabulous

went to the dmv to replace my id
this guy wouldn't leave me alone...kept telling me i was a pretty lady
i'm like dude...go away
they made me take a new pic- which is upsetting cause i had a really good one the first time around

i know you all missed me...
i missed you

but enuff of the emotional crap....
let's get to business!

So i got my yoga mat this weekend.
I plan on my first class tomorrow...soon i will be extraordinarly flexible and zen-like...
I was going to go the sunday class and got all ready
only to be foiled by my not reading the class schedule ....
it was at 4pm not 12pm like i thought
and that interupts my sunday naptime...duh

also this weekend i didn't eat as healthy as i was
i ate half a chocolate cake to lift my mood
after being "upset" over some things that i have little control over...
it was a good cake
i am not much of a comfort eater...an eater yes...
but i had a feeling that the cake would soothe my aggrieved soul
but as of this morning back to yogurt and fruit and stuff

Death By Chocolat Yield: 12 servings.

Ingredients

8 oz (225 g) dark semisweet chocolate (40-50% cocoa)
2/3 cup (140 g) butter
1 cup (210 g) sugar
4 eggs
4 heaped tablespoons (1 dl) all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1½ teaspoon baking powder or 1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 tablespoons sour cream

Ingredients for frosting

2/3 cup (1.6 dl) heavy cream or whipping cream
9 oz (260 g) semisweet chocolate (40-50% cocoa)

Method

Preheat oven to 350 deg F (Gas mark 4 or 180 deg C).
Line a circular 10 inch (25 cm) cake tin (3 inches tall) with greaseproof or other non-stick paper and grease the tin. (Please note that the cake will rise to 3 inches and collapse somewhat when cooled. If your cake tin is less than 10 inches wide and 3 inches tall we recommend that you use two cake tins.)
Break the chocolate into small pieces and melt it with butter over hot water.
Beat the eggs with sugar, mix with flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and vanilla extract.
Slowly fold in the melted butter and chocolate and the sour cream.
Bake at 350 degrees until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, approximately 50 minutes.
Cool the cake. Remove the crusted surface on the top of the cake, and cut in half, horizontally.

Frosting

Heat 2/3 cup (1.6 dl) of heavy cream or whipping cream in a sauce pan.
Remove from heat, add 9 oz (260 g) of finely chopped dark semisweet chocolate, stir until smooth, and let it cool until in thickens.
Use one 1/3 of the frosting between the two layers, 1/3 on top, and the rest around the cake. Put the cake into the fridge for one hour or more to harden the frosting.
This cake should have room temperature when served.

Variations

You may add 3 tablespoons of rum to the chocolate and butter mixture.
You may use your preferred chocolate frosting, or the frostings described for Chocolate Tart or Devil's Food Cake.
You can add chopped walnuts and decorate with whole walnuts for a marvelous nutty treat!

i watched the coolest show on PBS last night
no...not Masterpiece theatre's Bleak House with Gillian Anderson
who may I say looks lovely
and it makes me want to buy the book...the little that I saw
I liked Dickens Tale of Two Cities...not so much David Copperfield.

anyways the show was "tracking the Great White"
or something like that
The Monteray Bay Aquarium houses a great white shark in its tanks for i believe a little under a year...which is a remarkable feat because no other aquarium had been able to keep a Great White alive in captivity...most die from stress...

it was fascinating watching the progress the young shark, who I name Sheila the Shark,
grow in captivity and the issues facing the aquarium and how the had to deal with her natural insitct...
for the longest time they were able to feed her using a pole...
and may i say that Sheila is no cheap date...talking about wild restaurant quality fresh salmon people...
but as she got older she started taking chomps off of the smaller sharks, becoming more aggresive...
the coolest scene was showing the aquarist cleaning the windows of the exhibit, even behind the masks you could tell the divers were scared of the shark...
one cleaned the windows while the other stood guard watching Sheila, ready to bop her on the nose should she attack...
so cool

Eventually they had to release her back into the wild...
Oh i love aquariums...i think i foound this years big trip!

My dream job is to be an AQUARIST!...

the weekend was nice...fairly quite...
like most weekends

i did have a new online friend kinda tell me that i am boring...or something like that...
he has the impression i have an aversion to changing my situation
at this time i am content to be stable and yes..boring
but mainly due the major uproars in my life for the past few years...
but he was right that i need to make more of an effort to meet people

but then i come back to the fact that everyone i meet is crazy...and often times not in a good way
even so i have taken some steps...
i have emailed with a chickie looking for people to hang
i went to the gym more and looked at the various options there
i am planning to workout regularly with Marty...
and am looking into volunteering

I walked around the Fan this weekend and took some photos
must be careful because i really really like taking pictures of squirrels
it would be all like...hello people...this richmond...only squirrels live here
squirrels in top hats and squirrels eating nuts
squirrels looking spooky and squirrels doing aerobics..
i just like them

Still on my healthy foods kick
its weird ....for the longest time i couldn't eat yogurt
now its all i eat

just spilled coffee on my "supergirl forever"pajama pants that i got for christmas

so today is Saturday and I have the normal planned
my apt needs cleaning...it smells like onions from the sandwich i had last nite...
and i am out of kitty litter.
i have frozen tuna steaks defrosted and will have one of those for dinner
not really sure how to cook them...but i have a lime...so i guess that will go along with it
still on the eating healthier kick

gonna take a walk around the fan and maybe head to the gym for some weights...
my new couch cover is in...the pillows have been her for a week...
it's more of a dark red...darker than i thought
which is cool...cause it should hide the coffee stains when i spill

So Vegas was fun...I hope it was fun for M...
We spent quality time at the buffets and drinking at Margaritaville
where i got a free glass with my margarita.

We saw showgirls which M liked
and hookers walking the strip of shame early on a Vegas morning
Milkshakes at 3am means love
the room was nice
the hotel had penguins and flamingos
and i spent hours watching the ducks fly around the lil oasis
i yelled at them when they went flying off...
"ducks, its a desert out there....come back!"

We say a horrible obese elvis impersonator...
highlight of the trip.
He was so fat that he sat in a chair the whole time
while granny played the keyboard
he got up to shake his hips and ran out of breath...awesome

M enjoyed the .01 slots way to much
but i was the lucky one

the breakfast buffett at the excaliber was huge...and not to bad
the gameworks arcade...i had more fun than mark...i shot dinosaurs
he was disapointed that he couldn't get to any of the shooting games he wanted to play

I was not happy they did not have "whack a mole"
thats an awesome game!

So sad to see M leave...poor him had to deal with my crying...

over the past few years mystery series have moved past the old english lady detective, the hard-boiled pi, and the pesky teen sleuth...

the sub genres have become...well... bizarre
i think the best way to describe it to you, dear readers, is to illustrate the latest trends in mystery series:

1) The caterer turned unintentional mystery solver
Yes. you read right. Caterers are hot in the mystery market.
Despite in real life, most of us would avoid hiring someone to cook at an event who is associated with so many dead bodies.
The cateres come from all parts of the country,
I'v read about them in Colorado, Kansas City, Virginia...
What sets these books apart are their cutsey titles
ex: Killer Wedding

The Cereal Murders (from my favorite of the CULINARY genre)
Killer Pancake
Fudge Cupcake Murder
and the always popular
Death By Chocolate

Finally...these mysteries offer tasty sumptious recipes along with the dead bodies and crimes against nature...

2) Pets who solve mysteries
Cats are really popular detective characters
I also find that these books suck

3)Real life dead people solving mysteries.
This is just...odd

Sherlock Holmes is busy lately
and so are the minor characters from his books.
These series aren't too bad...but they do take lisence alot.
I like the Mary Russell ones

The real problem with these series, and most normal mystery series, hell any books that have a recurring character, is that they become redundant. Boring. You read them out of habit (I'm looking at you Cornwell, Patterson and George) Yet, the readers are harsh mistresses and when the authors try to deviate from the standard set-up they often face harsh criticism.(See Martha Grimes and her Paradise Hotel Series)

But I blame the publishing world for taking truly creative ideals and forcing sub-standard crap on us, while ignoring and not promoting truly good pieces of fiction.

its hard seeing all the abandoned pet stories coming out of new orleans...
however, i do believe in the ability of animals to fend for themselves, if they are not chained up in the backyard, locked inside a house...Pet rescue is important for several reasons
1)We are all some Gods creatures
2)Dead animals are just as dangerous as dead people
3)Leaving a pet in uncertain situation is terribly traumatic for people...i know there is no way i would evacuate without my cats...
4)it brings hope to all involved...
5)puppies!kitties!birdies! fishies!snakies! rabbities!

i think that is all we need to consider...they love us and we love them...

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans apparently survived Hurricane Katrina relatively unscathed according to a report in The Baltimore Sun. Hurricane Katrina hit the Louisiana city Monday. According to Ron Forman, president of the Audubon Nature Institute that oversees the city's aquarium and zoo, only a few flamingos died and was little other loss of animal life. The Audubon Zoo also fared well in the storm suffering limited damage from fallen trees. Located along the banks of the Mississippi River near the historic French Quarter, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas has some 10,000 animals and is considerd one of the world's foremost aquariums. Officials closed the aquarium early to prepare for Katrina. When the storm hit the aquarium lost power but relied on generator for keeping critical equipment operational. The aquarium also had plenty of food and freshwater according to an article in Wednesday's Palladium-Item. The French Quarter of New Orleans, built on the highest ground in the city, suffered less damage than other neighborhoods. The city's highest point is "Monkey Hill" in the New Orleans zoo. During the hurricane, The Dallas Morning News reports that "zoo staff took refuge in the reptile house, which was designed to withstand a major hurricane." The American Zoo and Aquarium Association reports that the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species (ACRES) lost only a whooping crane during the storm. The facility suffered some leaks at the Research Center. Four animal keepers were flown in by helicopter. Widespread power outages disabled the Audubon Nature Institute and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas web sites for many hours following the storm.
In neighboring Mississippi, the fate of a group of dolphins moved to Gulfport is unknown. My blog is no fun to read at this moment.

I want to cut and paste some exerpts from an interview with New Orleans Mayor Ralph Nagin.
I think it says it all

In response to a question about his conversation with President Bush...

"And they don't have a clue what's going on down here. They flew down here one time two days after the doggone event was over with TV cameras, AP reporters, all kind of goddamn -- excuse my French everybody in America, but I am pissed."

WWL: Did you say to the president of the United States, "I need the military in here"?

NAGIN: I said, "I need everything."

WWL: What do you need right now to get control of this situation?

NAGIN: I need reinforcements, I need troops, man. I need 500 buses, man. We ain't talking about -- you know, one of the briefings we had, they were talking about getting public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out here.

I'm like, "You got to be kidding me. This is a national disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

That's -- they're thinking small, man. And this is a major, major, major deal. And I can't emphasize it enough, man. This is crazy.

SCHOOL BUSES! IS THAT THE BEST WE CAN DO!-ss

WWL: Do you believe that the president is seeing this, holding a news conference on it but can't do anything until [Louisiana Gov.] Kathleen Blanco requested him to do it? And do you know whether or not she has made that request?

NAGIN: I have no idea what they're doing. But I will tell you this: You know, God is looking down on all this and if they are not doing everything in their power to save people they are going to pay the price. Because every day that we delay, people are dying and they're dying by the hundreds, I'm willing to bet you.

We're getting reports and calls that are breaking my heart, from people saying, "I've been in my attic. I can't take it anymore. The water is up to my neck. I don't think I can hold out." And that's happening as we speak.

You know what really upsets me, Garland? We told everybody the importance of the 17th Street Canal issue. We said, "Please, please take care of this. We don't care what you do. Figure it out."

They can try to take away states rights when it comes to zoning, to moral decisions, to taxation, to school systems but the FEDS CANNOT STEP IN DURING A TIME OF DISASTER AND CIVIL UNREST! BULLSHIT! BULLSHIT! BULLSHIT! WHAT WAS THE PATRIOT ACT ABOUT! IT GIVES THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT UNPRECEDENTED AND LOOSELY DEFINED POWERS TO INTERVENE IN AREAS BEYOND ITS SCOPE! DID THEY ASK FOR PERMISSION DO GO INTO NEW YORK DURING 9/11-ss

WWL: If some of the public called and they're right, that there's a law that the president, that the federal government can't do anything without local or state requests, would you request martial law?

NAGIN: I've already called for martial law in the city of New Orleans. We did that a few days ago.

WWL: Did the governor do that, too?

NAGIN: I don't know. I don't think so.

But we called for martial law when we realized that the looting was getting out of control. And we redirected all of our police officers back to patrolling the streets. They were dead-tired from saving people, but they worked all night because we thought this thing was going to blow wide open last night. And so we redirected all of our resources, and we hold it under check.

I'm not sure if we can do that another night with the current resources.

And I am telling you right now: They're showing all these reports of people looting and doing all that weird stuff, and they are doing that, but people are desperate and they're trying to find food and water, the majority of them.

Now you got some knuckleheads out there, and they are taking advantage of this lawless -- this situation where, you know, we can't really control it, and they're doing some awful, awful things. But that's a small majority of the people. Most people are looking to try and survive.

And one of the things people -- nobody's talked about this. Drugs flowed in and out of New Orleans and the surrounding metropolitan area so freely it was scary to me, and that's why we were having the escalation in murders. People don't want to talk about this, but I'm going to talk about it.

You have drug addicts that are now walking around this city looking for a fix, and that's the reason why they were breaking in hospitals and drugstores. They're looking for something to take the edge off of their jones, if you will.

And right now, they don't have anything to take the edge off. And they've probably found guns. So what you're seeing is drug-starving crazy addicts, drug addicts, that are wrecking havoc. And we don't have the manpower to adequately deal with it. We can only target certain sections of the city and form a perimeter around them and hope to God that we're not overrun.

NAGIN: Well, did the tsunami victims request? Did it go through a formal process to request?

You know, did the Iraqi people request that we go in there? Did they ask us to go in there? What is more important? HELL YEAH!-ss

And I'll tell you, man, I'm probably going get in a whole bunch of trouble. I'm probably going to get in so much trouble it ain't even funny. You probably won't even want to deal with me after this interview is over.

NAGIN: But we authorized $8 billion to go to Iraq lickety-quick. After 9/11, we gave the president unprecedented powers lickety-quick to take care of New York and other places.

Now, you mean to tell me that a place where most of your oil is coming through, a place that is so unique when you mention New Orleans anywhere around the world, everybody's eyes light up -- you mean to tell me that a place where you probably have thousands of people that have died and thousands more that are dying every day, that we can't figure out a way to authorize the resources that we need? Come on, man.

You know, I'm not one of those drug addicts. I am thinking very clearly.

And I don't know whose problem it is. I don't know whether it's the governor's problem. I don't know whether it's the president's problem, but somebody needs to get their ass on a plane and sit down, the two of them, and figure this out right now.

WWL: We'll do that. What else can we do?

NAGIN: Organize people to write letters and make calls to their congressmen, to the president, to the governor. Flood their doggone offices with requests to do something. This is ridiculous.

I don't want to see anybody do anymoregoddamn press conferences. Put a moratorium on press conferences. Don't do another press conference until the resources are in this city. And then come down to this city and stand with us when there are military trucks and troops that we can't even count.

Don't tell me 40,000 people are coming here. They're not here. It's too doggone late. Now get off your asses and do something, and let's fix the biggest goddamn crisis in the history of this country.

NAGIN: Well, I hope so, Garland. I am just -- I'm at the point now where it don't matter. People are dying. They don't have homes. They don't have jobs. The city of New Orleans will never be the same in this time.

Donate, contact your representives, pray to whom or whatever, hold those in charge responsible, vote, volunteer, give blood- just a few things to do- ss

I blame the federal government for what is going on in New Orleans at this moment.

We send massive aid in a short amount of time to evacuate small islands thousands of miles away and we cannot evacutate a city that is a 4 hour flight from DC!!!!!!!!!

Treat it like a war zone
Treat it like Iraq
Use the newly closed military bases to house people.
What about the Office of Homeland Security. Surely it has the organization and resources to deal with a massive disaster!
Or are those resources reserved for incidences involving a lighter shade of brown, President Bush?

The people of New Orleans are not REFUGEE's news media. They are AMERICAN CITIZEN.

Why are people so surprised by the looting of New Orleans, of the violence from the remaining residents, from the descension into chaos? It is survival of the fittest, eat or be eaten and most of all it has leveled the playing ground of the classes.

Cause see, for those of us who have visited New Orleans staying in the confines of the tourist attractions, the pre-packaged sanitized danger of the swamps and the cemetaries. Walking the streets of the French Quarter with your commerative Pat O Brien's Hurricane, surreptiously lifting your shirt for the thrill of adding another string of beads, throwing our diets and our money out thi windows. The food, the buildings, the sounds, god the music is awesome.

But we don't see the real New Orleans. Or maybe we just don't want to see cause on vacation who wants to deal with the realities of home. I don't think many realize just how poor that state is and how poor the poor are. And being poor in the Deep South has historically been a combination of racism, violence, demoralization, fear and anger. 30% of the population are living in poverty, many far below. Gangs, drugs, sex, money. A society where the law is often times as corrupt.

Then add into the worst national disaster to hit that area, if not the nation. People, it is not a refugee camp there. Refugee camps have basic necessities, refugee camps have some sense or order. Instead people are being plucked off their rooftops and being deposited on I-10, no water, no food, no shelter from the sun. No oxygen for those who need it, no drugs, no anything. No red cross vans. Social behaviors are dictated by the predicament and response. Social behaviors are learned not inherent. People turn ugly when desperate. You think you would act better, you would be decent, that you are not an animal. In the end though, we are all animals.

All of which is no excuse for the recent lawlessness. But lets put the blame on every parties shoulders and lets do something about restoring law and order. Its time for a military clamp down to contain looters. Will this take away from search and rescue? Yes. Desperate people for so long will fend for themselves the same way the person next to them is.

I love New Orleans, then and now. I will never lose my fascination with it even now that the facade has been swept away.

hello!

i know long time no update...
just been busy....kinda...at times...

I often realize that when I am wandering the halls alone I look at my feet
not out of some form of shyness... a condition i am rarely accused of...
